Aspen, a softer wood, forms the base of the shaft. This wood provides fingertip sensitivity thanks to its superior vibration transmission properties, resulting in lightning fast reaction speed and better gameplay performance. A sturdy layer of birch laminate wraps around the exterior of the shaft for added protection. This sturdy hardwood has excellent strength-to-weight qualities which enables it to preserve structural integrity without adding excessive weight. Foam Core The Guardian comes equipped with a foam core, designed to reduce the overall weight and improve the handling performance. The foam runs from the blade to the top of the paddle to help transmit vibrations consistently to the shaft. A series of rigid composite strips are embedded at strategic locations along the blade to increase the Guardian's stiffness and strength. While sturdy, their small profile means they add very little weight and don't disturb the balance or handling. Carbon Elite Blade A specialized carbon fiber weave and epoxy resin blend produces an ultra light material called carbon elite. Used in premium racing equipment, this material enjoys excellent strength-to-weight properties for high performance gear and is one of the reasons the Guardian handles as well as a pure carbon fiber stick. Combined with the composite strips, the blade is fortified and protected from impact damage and abraision wear. Behind the Scenes Designing the Perfect Stick Hockey is constantly evolving in response to a growing scientific mastery of the physical world and the ever increasing skill of athletes around the world. What started as a pond game, with primitive equipment carved from trees and sanded in the backyard, has grown into a half-billion dollar industry with gear that features space age technologies like carbon nanotube reinforcements, synthesized materials, and kevlar plating (the stuff used in body armor). Step 1: Built from the Atom Up Carbon fiber is usually associated with the glossy, finished product seen on the ice. This works for marketing, but it isn't telling the entire truth. In order to reach the final version, carbon fiber must undergo a series of transformations. It all starts with carbon atoms, which are linked together with thousands of other atoms to create carbon strands just a fraction the size of a single human hair. Step 2: Magic Carpet Ride These fiberscopic carbon strands are then woven together in a patchwork fabric. The interlaced swathes of carbon atoms is what gives carbon fiber it's unique checker-patterned appearance. The resulting material is glossy and incredibly strong, having been fused together at a molecular level. However, it is still just fabric, with all the flexibility and give of a regular t-shirt. In this form, carbon fabric is still completely unsuited for contact sports. Step 3: Bringing it All Together There are a variety of ways to transform carbon cloth into the stiff, finished carbon fiber used in hockey sticks. The stick derives it's shape from an epoxy resin blend. This gluelike substances is combined with the carbon fabric in a mold which, when the glue hardens, is removed. The result is a free-standing structure made out of glue, with most of the material strength and durability coming from the sturdy carbon fabric underneath. Step 4: The Right Density for the Job When it comes to making hockey sticks, there are several subtle considerations. The density of the carbon fabric plays an important part in both strength and weight. A cloth with more carbon strands has a greater density and is much stronger, but it also weighs more. Different epoxy resins provide a variety of additional benefits. The Eleven Fusion Bond is a water resistant resin designed to prevent moisture erosion and thereby increase the stick's durability. The Guardian features a 3K carbon fiber weave for ultra-light play, with carbon ridges to make up for any lost strength. The result is perfection!
